In episode 17 of WordFed Life, Verlene Cromwell explores the profound impact of words on our lives and the lives of those around us.
Anchored in Proverbs 12:18, "There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing," this episode draws a powerful contrast between words that wound and words that heal.
Words carry immense power. They linger, shaping confidence and identity, influencing faith. God created the world with words, and though we cannot create like God, our words influence the atmosphere around us.
Proverbs paints a vivid picture: careless words are like sword thrusts, leaving wounds and scars. Many carry wounds from words spoken long ago: criticism, rejection, mockery. Yet, the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Our words can become medicine:
- An encouraging conversation restores hope.
- A sincere apology rebuilds trust.
- A prayer strengthens a discouraged heart.
- A kind word changes someone's day.
Jesus always spoke life. He spoke grace, acceptance, restoration, and peace. Even in correction, his purpose was restoration, not humiliation.
Before speaking, ask: Will these words build up or tear down? Will they point someone closer to Christ? Will they leave hope or hurt?
The heart directs the tongue. Jesus teaches that our mouths reveal our hearts. Changing vocabulary isn't enough; God transforms our hearts. Filled with his word, conversations change: from complaining to giving thanks, from criticizing to encouraging, from speaking fear to speaking faith.
Speak healing at home. Those closest to us often need our healing words the most. Imagine starting each day with life-giving words: "I believe in you. I'm thankful for you. God has a purpose for your life. I love you."
Speak healing to yourself. Your self-talk matters. Are your private words filled with faith or defeat? Speak God's truth over your life: you are loved, forgiven, chosen, a masterpiece, more than a conqueror through Christ.
Questions for reflection:
1. What kinds of words am I planting in others' lives?
2. What do my words reveal about my heart?
3. What would change if I intentionally became someone whose tongue brings healing?
"Let's choose words that reflect the heart of Christ. Let's become people whose conversations leave others stronger than when we found them."
